From Chemist to Wedding Planner: How Science Shaped My Approach to Luxury Wedding Design

If you had told me ten years ago that I'd be designing luxury weddings instead of conducting chemical research, I probably wouldn't have believed you. Before founding Van der Vows, I earned my Master's degree in Chemistry and spent years working in pharmaceutical research, where every day revolved around precision, analytical thinking, and solving complex problems. While wedding planning and chemistry may seem like completely different careers, I've found they're built on many of the same principles. As a chemist, I learned that every variable matters, and I approach weddings with that same mindset.

Every timeline, vendor, installation, and design decision affects the overall experience. Rather than simply selecting beautiful flowers or linens, I design weddings as complete systems where architecture, lighting, florals, fashion, tablescapes, stationery, and guest flow work together to tell a cohesive story. My scientific background taught me to anticipate challenges before they arise, create thoughtful processes, and remain calm under pressure, allowing my couples to be fully present on one of the most important days of their lives.
It also shaped the way I think creatively. Innovation has always been at the heart of what I do, whether that means designing sculptural floral installations, reimagining seating charts as works of art, or finding unexpected ways to make each celebration feel entirely unique. I believe exceptional wedding design isn't about following trends. It's about understanding how every detail contributes to the feeling your guests experience from the moment they arrive until the last dance. Leaving chemistry wasn't about leaving science behind. It was about applying the same curiosity, discipline, and problem-solving skills to something deeply personal. Today, I combine analytical planning with elevated editorial design to create weddings that are both beautiful and intentionally executed. At Van der Vows, I believe unforgettable weddings aren't created by chance. They're built through thoughtful planning, refined design, and an unwavering attention to detail.
